Having a fit body helps people carry themselves with more confidence as it is considered a symbol of health in society. But as we all know and sometimes resent, not each body type is unique or built the same. Some us of may have a little extra in undesirable places due to localised fat deposits.
Once again thanks to medicine and technology, there is a solution in the form of cosmetic surgery.
Liposuction is the procedure of sucking out small amounts of fat on areas of the body where deposits of fat tend to collect. In women, those fat deposits occur from the waist down, on hips, on outer thighs, etc. For men, they tend to accumulate above the waist, on the abdomen and sides of the waist or around the chest.
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures that aims to tackle problem areas, which are sometimes hard to lose even when you are following a balanced diet and regularly visiting the gym. It alters the body shape with results proving to be long-lasting, provided you maintain a healthy weight.
What does the liposuction surgery involve?
Liposuction takes 2-3 hours and is usually performed under General Anaesthesia or IV sedation by an anaesthetist. During the procedure, the fat is removed through a hollow instrument or tube known as a cannula that removes the fat infiltration with anaesthetic fluid.
Your surgeon would first mark on your body the area where fat is to be removed and inject this area with an anaesthetic to reduce blood loss, bruising and swelling. The fat cells are then broken up with modern machines using ultrasound energy (such as Vaser) to melt fat or use high pressure water jet systems (such as Bodyjet Evo) to dislodge fat prior to removal.
Once the cannula is inserted, the suction tube is moved back and forth which loosens the fat and makes it easier to suck out. Finally, any excess fluid and blood are then drained.
Who is the ideal candidate?
The best liposuction candidates are those who have good skin tone and elasticity, where the skin can mould into the new shape and contours. People whose skin lacks elasticity may end up with loose-looking skin in areas where the procedure was done.
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure
It is important to remember that liposuction is designed to improve your body contour and not for weight loss. It is only done in relatively small areas of the human body and is in no way a treatment for obesity or to get rid of cellulite or stretch marks.
Is fat transfer possible with liposuction?
It is possible and often advised in order to ensure a proportionate result. The procedure will involve transferring some of the fat from one area into another to achieve a balanced aesthetic body contour. Fat transfer is increasingly becoming the best method for buttock & breast augmentation done at the same time as liposuction in selected individuals.
Does Liposuction treat any medical conditions?
Liposuction is used to treat the following the conditions:
- Lipomas, which are benign fatty tumours
- Gynecomastia, a condition where fatty breast tissue develops in men
- Lipodystrophy syndrome, where fat accumulates in one part of the body and is lost in another. Liposuction can improve the patient’s appearance by providing a more proportionate body fat distribution
- Extreme weight loss after obesity, where liposuction is used to correct abnormalities and excess skin
After the procedure, you will have to wear an elastic support corset or compression bandages to help reduce any potential swelling and bruising. This must be worn for several weeks after the operation, as per your doctor’s instructions.
It usually takes about two weeks to make a full recovery, and strenuous activity for up to four weeks should be avoided. The results of the procedure aren’t immediately noticeable until the swelling has gone down, and could take up to six months for the area to settle completely.
