A fit body helps people carry themselves with more confidence as it is considered a symbol of health and smartness in society. But as we all know and sometimes resent, not everyone has a perfectly contoured body. The majority of people have extra fat deposits in undesirable body areas due to which the body loses its shape and becomes uneven. Once again, thanks to cosmetic surgery, there is a solution to this problem in the form of liposuction treatment.

This blog post will discuss the liposuction procedure and its role in achieving an ideal body.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure of sucking out fat deposits from the different body areas surgically. In women, stubborn fat deposits are usually present around the waist, hips, outer thighs, etc. Whereas in men, excess fat deposits accumulate above the waist, in the abdomen, and sides of the waist or around the chest.

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures that aim to remove stubborn fats from the tricky areas that do not respond to a balanced diet or regular exercise. It alters the body shape with results proving to be long-lasting, but only if you maintain a healthy weight.

What Does Liposuction Surgery Involve?

Liposuction surgery takes almost 2-3 hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. During the procedure, the fat is removed through a hollow instrument or tube known as a cannula.

Your surgeon would first mark the body area from where fat is to be removed. After that, they inject anesthesia into the targeted area to reduce blood loss, bruising, and swelling. The fat tissues are then broken down by using three different techniques, which include the following:

  • Using Ultrasound energy (such as in Vaser Liposuction)
  • Using high-pressure water jet systems (such as in Bodyjet Liposuction) to dislodge fat before removal.
  • Using Laser light (such as in Laser Liposuction) to melt down the fats.

Once the cannula is inserted, the suction tube is moved back and forth, which loosens the fats and makes it easier to suck them out. Finally, any excess fluid and blood are then drained.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure

It is important to remember that liposuction is designed to improve your body contours and is not suitable for weight loss. It is only done in relatively small areas of the human body and is not a treatment for obesity, cellulite, or stretch marks.

Is fat transfer possible with liposuction?

It is possible and often advised to ensure a proportionate result. The procedure will involve transferring some fat from one area to another to achieve aesthetically balanced body contours. Fat transfer is increasingly becoming a popular method for buttock & breast augmentation done simultaneously with liposuction in selected individuals.

Does Liposuction treat any medical conditions?

Apart from body contouring, Liposuction is also used to treat the following conditions:

  • Lipomas, which are benign fatty tumors
  • Gynecomastia, a condition where fatty breast tissue develops in men
  • Lipodystrophy syndrome, where fat accumulates in one part of the body and is lost in another. Liposuction can improve the patient’s appearance by providing a more proportionate body fat distribution.
  • Extreme weight loss after obesity, where liposuction is used to correct abnormalities

What does Aftercare Include?

After the procedure, you will have to wear a compression bandage to reduce any potential swelling and bruising. This must be worn for several weeks after the operation, or as per your doctor’s instructions.

It usually takes about two weeks to recover fully. Also, you should avoid strenuous activities for up to four weeks during the aftercare phase. The procedure results aren’t immediately noticeable until the swelling has gone down, and it can take around six months for the area to settle ultimately.
