Stretch marks are a form of dermal scarring, medically known as striae distensae. These indented streaks commonly appear on the lower abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, and breasts. While anyone can develop these marks, pregnant women are most commonly affected, especially during the last trimester.

Typically, stretch marks do not cause pain or discomfort or pose any harm to an individual’s health. However, most people do not like their appearance on the skin, and stretch mark removal can help them get rid of these unsightly streaks.

Common Causes of Stretch Marks

Typically, the human skin is elastic, but elastic fibers in the dermis can weaken and break due to overstretching. When the elastic fibers break, they irritate the blood vessels, making them visible. They first appear red or purple, but eventually, fat cells become visible, making them appear pale or white. So, the primary cause of stretch marks is excessive overstretching of the skin.

Besides overstretched skin, some other risk factors of stretch marks are:

  • Genetics
  • Cortisone (a hormone made by the adrenal glands that weaken the skin’s elastic fibers) levels in the blood
  • Pregnancy (women are generally more prone to getting stretch marks)
  • Obesity or overweight
  • Excessive and rapid weight loss or gain
  • Degree of pressure on the skin
  • Using corticosteroid medication (it leads to excessive cortisone formation)
  • Undergoing breast augmentation surgery
  • Genetic disorders like Marfan syndrome, Cushing syndrome, etc.

Stretch Marks Symptoms

Striae distensae or stretch marks differ according to an individual’s skin type, underlying cause, and location of the stretch marks. An expert evaluates these marks before removing striae through stretch marks removal treatment.

Some common symptoms that help experts in stretch marks diagnosis are as follows:

  • Patients will have indented lines covering large areas of the body, especially the abdomen.
  • The skin will feel slightly raised and itchy.
  • You will notice pink, blue, purple, or red streaks on the skin.

Stretch Mark Treatments

Most people don’t feel bothered by stretch marks enough to get striae distensae treatment. But some people find these marks unsightly and look for stretch mark removal treatments.

Different treatment techniques are used to treat these marks and significantly reduce their appearance. However, no treatment can completely erase stretch marks from the skin.

Some common stretch marks treatments are:

  • Laser Treatment

Laser resurfacing treatment is a non-surgical and minimally invasive treatment for stretch marks removal. It uses focused laser beams to target the stretch marks. These laser beams trigger the natural generation of collagen and elastin. As a result of collagen regeneration, stretch marks start fading and blending into the surrounding skin. Although this treatment provides excellent results, candidates may need more than one session to get the desired results.

At Euromed Clinic Center, we use Plexr and Fractional CO2 laser to perform this treatment.

  • Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are another commonly used striae treatment. Chemical peels are known for enhancing natural collagen production. So, this procedure exfoliates the skin and improves collagen levels in the skin, which shrinks the stretch marks, making them barely visible. An expert applies a skin-friendly acidic solution to the affected area during the treatment. However, each candidate may need a different number of sessions, depending on their skin conditions.

  • PRP with Ultrasound

PRP with ultrasound is a minimally invasive stretch mark reduction procedure that uses a candidate’s own blood to extract the PRP (platelet-rich plasma). PRP is known for enhancing collagen production in the skin. When the extracted PRP is injected into the affected areas, it helps significantly reduce stretch marks.

Nowadays, PRP therapy is combined with an ultrasound treatment to improve the appearance of stretch marks.

  • Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is another common treatment for removing striae that work by scrubbing away dead skin cells. An expert uses a handheld device to blow crystals into the skin during the treatment. The abrasive substance used in this treatment exfoliates the skin and scrubs away dead skin cells. As a result, it promotes more elastic skin and reduces stretch marks’ severity.

  • Radiofrequency Treatment

Radiofrequency striae distensae treatment uses radio wave energy to heat the cells and stimulate natural collagen production. Recently, micro-needling has been combined with radiofrequency treatments to target deeper skin tissues. The microneedle penetrates the skin to release radiofrequency waves into the skin. When these layers reach deeper, they stimulate collagen, improving the overall skin texture. RF microneedling has also been reported to improve stretch marks, but more evidence is needed to determine its effect on stretch marks.

Stretch Marks Treatment Results

The recovery period after the removal of stretch marks is generally minimal, but it depends on each candidate’s condition. Candidates can make the recovery period smooth and uneventful by following the dermatologist’s guidelines.

As far as the results are concerned, treatment cannot erase stretch marks permanently. It also cannot prevent new stretch mark formation. However, it can significantly reduce their appearance. Moreover, the longevity of the effects can be increased by following aftercare instructions.
