Body Lift Treatment

Home Plastic Surgery Body Lift Treatment

Losing a significant amount of weight is a huge achievement for obese people and a big step towards a healthy life. This is because it is not only weight that has been lost but the person has also avoided a variety of health risks. However, the happiness can be short-lived when the person realizes that his/her body is not as good-looking as they or hoped it’ll be due to the amount of excess sagging skin on various parts of the body. This can cause both mental and emotional distress and is sometimes painful. Body lift surgery is designed to remove the excess baggy skin for a more tightening effect. Body Lift treatment helps individuals achieve their goals by streamlining their silhouette after a massive weight loss.

What is a Body Lift?

Body lift surgery or Belt lipectomy is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess fat and sagging skin to improve the shape and tone of a person’s body. The skin can lose elasticity and becomes sag when it has been stretched for a long period. This can cause it to fail to restore back to its original shape and size.

Individuals who have achieved a significant amount of weight loss through exercise and diet or bariatric surgery, more often than not are left with large amounts of loose, heavy folds of skin around the face, abdomen, thighs, buttocks, breasts, and arms. A lower body lift treats and contours the thighs, hips, buttocks, waist, and abdomen in one procedure.

Candidate for a Body Lift Surgery

Individuals who are considering undergoing a body lift surgery must meet certain candidacy criteria which include:

  • Having significant soft tissue looseness in different areas of their body
  • Be healthy with no medical conditions that can increase the risk of surgery or impair healing
  • Have realistic expectations about the body lift surgery
  • They should not be smokers
  • Be committed to a healthy lifestyle

Preparation for the surgery

Preparing for a body lift surgery involves discussing the procedure with your plastic surgeon. This will include the potential risks and outcomes, your current medications, medical conditions, drug allergies, and use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. You will also be evaluated for any existing conditions and your general health.

Body Lift procedure

Body lift requires the plastic surgeon to make extensive incisions. The length and pattern of the incisions typically depend on the target area and amount of excess skin to be removed, and the surgical judgment as well. The incisions are usually strategically placed and can be hidden by most types of clothing.

This body contouring procedure is done under general anesthesia, meaning the patient will be asleep throughout the entire surgical procedure.

Once the anesthesia has kicked in, the plastic surgeon makes an incision/s in the treatment area. He/she lifts the skin from the underlying tissue, removes excess skin and fat, tightens, repositions, and stitches the muscles, the skin is closed with sutures, and that particular body part is bandaged. A drainage tube may be temporarily placed at the incision site to collect excess blood and fluids.

The amount of time a body lift surgery takes depends on the needs of the patient.

What to expect after the surgery?

Body lift surgery involves a significant recovery time as it’s a major surgical procedure. Pain and discomfort are usually managed with pain medication which is administered intravenously or intramuscular and later orally. You will be provided with post-op instructions that you should follow to ensure a smooth recovery and attain the desired results. Surgeons may recommend you to spend a night or two in the hospital for post-surgery monitoring.

The patient’s diet during the recovery will be changed to reduce the risks of complications.

A medical compression garment will be provided and should be worn at all times except when showering. Two days post-op, the dressings are removed and showering is allowed. You will be taught how to take care of the incisions.

Walking and moving around are encouraged as soon as possible but further exercising and lifting should be avoided until further healing has taken place. It usually takes a few weeks before you can continue your normal routine life.
